White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday that Iran must be held accountable for the death of Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of the country's morality police for “unsuitable attire,” allegedly wearing a hijab improperly and breaking a strictly enforced dress code.

Jean-Pierre said the U.S. was calling on Iran to "end its use of violence" against women, as protests over Amini's death have grown in the country. As part of these demonstrations, women have cut their hair and burned headscarves.

She also outlined what the U.S. had done in response to actions taken by the Iranian government during protests, including allowing tech firms to be able to expand their business in Iran and give more residents access to internet following Tehran clamping down on access.
