Madagascar’s secretary of state for police has just completed an incredible and involuntary marathon swim, after his helicopter plunged into the middle of the ocean, 12 hours away from land.
Serge Gelle’s helicopter was there to survey the site of a recent shipwreck, but ended up in trouble of its own, leaving Gelle stranded off the island’s northeast coast. He managed to survive by making an improvised flotation device from a helicopter seat, then began the grueling 12-hour swim back to shore.
The 57-year-old minister was pictured on his return, exhausted and cold, but amazingly not injured. He told rescue workers, ‘My time to die hasn’t come yet.’
