Some of the 18 defendants accused of illegally seeking to claim Arizona's 2020 electoral votes for then-U.S. President Donald Trump, appear before a state judge. Former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows are among those accused of plotting to assemble a slate of pro-Trump electors who falsely claimed to represent the Southwestern battleground state's legitimate electoral votes.
The case stems from the attempt by Trump, a Republican, and his allies to pressure election officials in several states to overturn the presidential election won by Democrat Joe Biden. The pair will face off again in November 2024.
