Lifting of the Siege of Leningrad | Rare Footage Released on 78th Anniversary

Archive footage from 1941, 1942, and 1944 captures moments from the Soviet city during its almost 900-day siege by Germany.

The Nazi blockade of Leningrad began on September 8, 1941, after the last road to the city was cut off. On January 18, 1943, the Red Army managed to open a narrow land corridor. The siege wasn’t completely lifted until January 27 the following year.

It’s believed to be one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history – between 600,000 and 1.5 million people are estimated to have died.

This archive footage was released as part of ‘100 key events in Russia in the 20th and 21st centuries’, a joint project between Ruptly and the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive.
