U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris met with state and local lawmakers in Indianapolis, Ind., on Monday, where she delivered remarks regarding the overturning of Roe v. Wade, removing protections against abortion rights.

This visit comes as Indiana became the first in the nation to hold a special session to consider legislation on an abortion ban.

"People need to learn how a woman's body works," said Harris, regarding the time it takes for a woman to find out she's pregnant.

The White House says the meeting was meant to "convey the Administration’s commitment to protecting access to reproductive health care, including abortion access, and will encourage the legislators to continue fighting to protect reproductive rights."

During her remarks, the vice president said the Supreme Court decision "took a constitutional right from the people of America."

She also railed against Indiana's possible ban, which would include few exceptions for which an abortion would be allowed. Harris said the possible ban, and other more extreme versions that don't allow exceptions even in the case of rape or incest, is something she finds particularly disturbing from the perspective of a former prosecutor.

"This has created a health-care crisis in America," said Harris. "To suggest that she would not have the autonomy and authority to make a decision about what happens to her body is outrageous."
