The "Lava Fire" in northern California's Siskiyou County continued to grow on Thursday, but has reached 25 per cent containment nearly a week after it was sparked by lightning June 26.
But even as containment begins to have some effect, another fire called the "Salt Fire" started Wednesday in Shasta County and ballooned from just five acres to 2,800 with no containment.
Both fires have prompted evacuations in nearby communities as record heat and dry conditions have set the stage for rapid growth, officials said. Wind has also been a factor.
