La Palma volcano: Residents hold procession praying for eruption to end

Several La Palma residents gathered on Tuesday seeking divine intervention in order to halt the Cumbre Vieja volcano after a month of eruptions.

Worshippers prayed in El Paso municipality while carrying Virgen del Pino images, urging an end to the volcano which has devastated the island.

Other processions were held in Tijerazo and Santa Cruz de la Palma.

Streams of red-hot lava have engulfed almost 800 hectares (2000 acres) of land, destroying about 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations since the eruption started on Sept. 19. More than 6,000 people have had to leave their homes.

Volcano experts said on Tuesday they cannot know when volcano will stop after a month of eruption.
