The Stone of Scone, or Stone of Destiny, is an ancient item that sits under the coronation chair, where King Charles III will be sitting when he is officially crowned May 6.

An oblong block of red sandstone that had been used for centuries in coronations for Scottish kings, it was stolen by Edward I's forces in 1296 and returned by the British Government to Scotland in 1996. It is now kept with the Scottish Crown Jewels in Edinburgh Castle when not in use at coronations.

While the precious object can be easily overlooked in favour of the carriages, scepters and crowns that will feature prominently during the coronation, the story behind the rock is nonetheless fascinating.

Crystal Goomansingh explains how the stone has been both the spoils of war and the prize in a historic heist.
