The US House of Representatives finally has a new speaker. Kevin McCarthy has been elected to the post after days of turmoil.
The Republican was sworn in after he won on the 15th ballot. He faced fierce resistance from members of his own party. McCarthy finally clinched victory with 216 votes but has been forced to compromise his agenda to right-wing hardliners secure the win. Without a speaker, the House has been unable to swear in new members or proceed with any business.
The small group of Republican holdouts angered many within their own party. And during the fourteenth vote, things nearly got physical, when Representative Mike Rogers got into a heated discussion with one of the main obstructionists, Matt Gaetz. Rogers had to be pulled back from lunging at Gaetz, the Florida congressman refusing to vote for McCarthy, at one point, even casting his ballot for former President Donald Trump.
