1. Germany cleared the way on Wednesday for Europe to send scores of battle tanks to Ukraine, and Washington was poised make a similar announcement - moves hailed by Kyiv as a potential turning point in the war and condemned by Moscow as escalation.

2. The man accused of shooting and killing seven farm workers near San Francisco in the latest of two back-to-back gun rampages in California that claimed 18 lives overall was due in court on Wednesday for his initial appearance before a judge.

3. America was supposed to be a place of safety for Jose Romero when he arrived some two years ago to work on a California farm alongside other immigrants from Mexico and China.

4. Rwandan forces fired at a fighter jet from Democratic Republic of Congo that it said had violated its airspace, prompting the Congolese government to accuse it of an act of war.

5. Heavy snow blanketed wide swathes of Japan, snarling traffic, forcing hundreds of flight cancellations, disrupting train travel and leaving at least one person dead.
