NASA scientists said Monday that the James Webb Telescope had reached its final orbit, at a point about 1.6 million kilometres from Earth.
The world's largest and most powerful telescope has been hurtling toward its destination since its launch on Christmas Day 2021, on a quest to behold light from the first stars and galaxies and search the universe for signs of life.
Amber Straughn, deputy project scientist for James Webb Space Telescope science communications, said Monday the telescope’s instruments would now have to cool down, a process that is expected to take several months.
She added that NASA expects the first science images from the telescope by the summer, or in about five months
