After six challenging years in office, Jacinda Ardern stunned the world by resigning as New Zealand's prime minister.

Ardern was 37 when she assumed office, the country’s youngest head of government since 1856.

She easily won two elections, but during a televised statement, she said one of the lessons of leadership is "knowing when to leave".
