Italy's former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has gone on trial for his role in blocking a migrant rescue ship in 2019.
The far-right politician is accused of kidnapping and abuse of power, for preventing two vessels from docking for days.
Salvini says he was just carrying out the policies of the government at the time.
Al Jazeera's Adam Raney reports from Rome, Italy.
