The Italian army on Sunday carried out a controlled explosion of a World War Two bomb found in the low water after Italy's longest river, the Po, dried up in the worst drought the country has seen in 70 years.
Near the small northern town of Borgo Virgilio, the army detonated the 1,000-pound bomb that had been discovered by fishermen on July 25.
The army said in a statement that in order to conduct the operation safely, about 3,000 people living in the area of Borgo had to be evacuated.
