Israel's parliament voted into law on Monday a contested curb on some Supreme Court powers submitted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, the Knesset speaker said.

The bill passed by a 64-0 vote, the speaker added, after opposition lawmakers abandoned the Knesset plenum and walked out, shouting in protest.

Commanding a comfortable majority in parliament, Netanyahu's coalition won the vote on the bill that limits the Supreme Court's powers to overrule decisions made by governments and ministers.

The proposed change to the law sparked unprecedented nationwide protests, backed by banks and businesses.

Global's Reggie Cecchini has more on what this means for the country and how world leaders are reacting.
