The Israeli army has leveled buildings in the densely populated Gaza Strip with airstrikes overnight. The army says the strikes were on Hamas targets. Gaza authorities said over 300 people had died while an Israeli military official said that "hundreds of terrorists" had been killed and dozens captured. The Palestinian militant Islamist group Hamas on Saturday launched a massive surprise attack on Israel, killing hundreds of people and taking dozens of hostages.⁣

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israel was "embarking on a long and difficult war," with the government set to cut off electricity, fuel, and goods to the Gaza Strip. The fighting is threatening to escalate further after the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah shelled Israeli positions in disputed territory along the Israeli border. Israel's army responded with drone strikes on Hezbollah targets.
