Protesters who commit hate crimes while taking part in public protests could face bigger punishments, the government has warned.

Science and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan told Sky News there were no plans to redefine "extremism".

But she added that "if we feel over the coming weeks that is not enough of course we would take further action".

There has been criticism that a small minority of individuals taking part in recent pro-Palestinian rallies in the UK have engaged in pro-Hamas chants or waved Hamas flags.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 8,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict. At least 1,400 people were killed in Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October, officials there have said.
