Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, speaking for the first time since Israel-Hamas violence erupted on Oct. 7, warned on Friday that a “wider” or “complete war” in the Middle East was a “realistic possibility,” in a speech that was expected to indicate whether his group would wage a full-fledged war against Israel.
Nasrallah said in a televised address that Hezbollah have been escalating day by day, forcing Israel to keep its forces near the Lebanese border instead of the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. Nasrallah blamed the U.S. for the high civilian death toll in Gaza and said that a de-escalation in the besieged enclave was vital to prevent regional war.
In Lebanon, 73-year-old Palestinian Samir Al Habet supported Nasrallah’s remarks, saying that, “We salute him. He stands with us and with the Palestinian resistance and we salute his stance… Because if Gaza is over, Lebanon is over. The whole Arab nation is over."
Meanwhile, Palestinians in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron expressed disappointment following the speech. Palestinian resident Nader Al Ewawi said that he understood how complicated the situation for Hezbollah is in Lebanon and in the region, but that “the war on the Lebanese front is small."
