After photos and videos of Palestinian detainees stripped down to their underwear made their way across social media, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari claimed on Sunday that the photos were part of a “routine security procedure” to help determine whether captives were wearing hidden explosives.

Hagari expanded by saying that "It's something we have been doing for years, during battle, because we have had incidents when people have detonated themselves upon our forces.”

On Friday, senior Hamas official Izzat El-Reshiq accused the IDF of committing a “heinous crime against innocent civilians,” while the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was concerned by the images and that all detainees must be treated with humanity and dignity in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Detainees who passed Israel’s security probe — that is supposedly in place to help determine civilians from Hamas militants — said they were subject to torture for five days.

“We were thrown on the ground for five days with no food, no water — 24 hours a day of torture. They hit us with the back of the gun on our backs,” Mohamed Salim, a released detainee, said from a hospital in Gaza on Saturday.
