Al Jazeera senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says that Israel has carried out successful targeted assassinations against Palestinian leaders for decades, but has failed to wipe out armed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
“It’s been 50 years, assassination programmes run by military intelligence and Mossad, throughout the world,” said Bishara, pointing to successful attacks against figures such as Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yasin in 2004 and Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh in 2015.
“What was the result? Israel could have declared victory at each time it assassinated one of those leaders. But if you look at the scope, at the history of it, Islamic Jihad became stronger. Hamas became stronger. And Hezbollah became stronger.”
