In 2014 Islamic State (IS) seized Iraq's second-city, Mosul. At the time, a senior lawyer at the telecoms company Ericsson recommended shutting down the company's operation in Iraq, but senior managers ignored this, according to a report seen by the BBC.

Affan was among a group of engineers doing fieldwork for Ericsson when IS took over the city. He was sent, by Ericsson, to ask IS for permission to continue working in Mosul but instead he was kidnapped and held while IS demanded ransom from the company.

These revelations have come from documents leaked in the last week to the International Consortium of International Journalists and shared with the BBC and 29 other media partners.
