Kosar Eftekhari and many others like her are living proof of the violent oppression in Iran, according to United Nations Human Rights Council.
The 24-year-old theatre actress was taking part in a protest when she says a security agent targeted and blinded one of her eyes with a rubber bullet.
The results of the U.N. fact-finding mission on Iran’s response to the Woman, Life, Freedom movement were presented on March 18 to the U.N. Human Rights Council during its regular session in Geneva.
The mission says it found a pattern of security forces targeting vital body parts of protesters and bystanders including their eyes and genitals. It also says it uncovered murders, torture, and rape amounting to “crimes against humanity” during Iran’s brutal crackdown on protesters following the October 2022 in-custody death of Mahsa Jina Amini.
As Negar Mojtahedi reports, the council is encouraging countries, including Canada, to start turning up the heat on Iran.
