Former Israeli Labor Party chief Isaac Herzog was sworn in as president on Wednesday and pledged to use the largely ceremonial role to try and heal deep divisions within Israeli society.

The pomp-filled ceremony at Israel's parliament, the Knesset, saw Herzog embrace outgoing president Reuven Rivlin and take the oath to office to applause from lawmakers. He will hold a seven-year term in the role.

"From here, I will go to Israel's presidential residence and begin a journey between the rifts and chasms of Israeli society," he told lawmakers.

Later at a ceremony welcoming Herzog to the presidential residency, Rivlin said he was the "right man in the right place."
