It was a historic week that saw former U.S. president Donald Trump pleading not guilty to 34 criminal charges. But that may not have been the most significant development on the American political landscape that day.

Out in Wisconsin, a vote to flip a Republican seat on the state Supreme Court could upend state laws on everything from voting to abortion rights.

While Trump still commands much of the spotlight, support may be shrinking for Republicans, and developments like this show Democrats are taking advantage.
