Ireland, Norway and Spain formally recognized a Palestinian state in a co-ordinated effort by the three Western nations on Wednesday. While dozens of countries have recognized a Palestinian state, none of the major western powers had done so until now.
“We here in Ireland, we see you, we recognize you, we respect you. And today, Ireland formally recognizes the State of Palestine,” Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris said in Dublin Parliament on Tuesday. “We refuse to believe that the only future for the Israeli and Palestinian people is a future of hatred, conflict and death. We cannot accept that, and we will not accept that,” Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin added.
“This is not the time for such announcement on recognition,” Israel’s Ambassador to Dublin said prior to the official recognition.
Relations between the European Union (EU) and Israel have nosedived with Madrid insisting that the EU should take measures against Israel for its continued attacks in Rafah.
Meanwhile, Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz lashed out at Spain, saying that country's government was "being complicit in inciting genocide against Jews and war crimes."
