Iran has denounced its latest sportswoman for appearing publicly without wearing a hijab.
Niloufar Mardani appeared without a headscarf on the podium of the skating marathon in Istanbul on Sunday, having claimed first place in the event.
Despite competing in a personal capacity and not on behalf of the national team, the Tehran sporting authority still condemned Mardani for not wearing an outfit approved by the country’s ministry.
The skater called the incident "unintentional."
This is in light of the anti-government protests that have engulfed the country for the past two months over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman who was detained by the morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab “inappropriately”.
