Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly unveiled the federal government’s hotly-anticipated new Indo-Pacific strategy on Sunday, which she said offered a “clear framework” for dealing with the Chinese government.

The plan, Joly said, will include a $2.2 billion investment in the region over five years. The investment will include a half-billion dollars to deploy more naval frigates to areas like the South China Sea and engage in military training operations with countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The federal Indo-Pacific strategy seeks to take advantage of the economic growth in the region – estimated to be home to over half the global economy by 2040 – while also pursuing Canadian priorities in climate change prevention, rights for women and girls and Indigenous reconciliation.

The threat posed by China looms large over the plan. Canada aims to maintain diplomatic ties to the country and find common ground where possible while also defending its interests and security.
