People in India's Gujarat state were facing water shortages on Sunday, as women from villages walked up to two kilometres to fetch water in the blistering heat.

One man in the Gujarat village of Navsari, Chandubhai Yadav, said the water available to villagers was dirty. "Locals face immense challenges because of the water shortage," he said.

Local water sources were drying up.

In Gujarat's largest city, Ahmedabad, birds and animals also suffered as temperatures shot up. A charitable animal hospital treated pets and wild animals for dehydration.

"There are no natural water sources in the city and in its vicinity," explained the hospital's program director, Moumita. "If we get 100 animals every day...100 cases, so 80 per cent...70-80 per cent of them are dehydrated."

Scorching heat in the northern city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh saw tourists cut short their visits to the iconic Taj Mahal monument.

More than a billion people are at risk of heat-related impacts in the region, scientists have warned, linking the early onset of an intense summer to climate change.
