The delivery of vaccines to developing countries through the UN-backed COVAX programme could be pushed back by weeks.
The delay comes after India put a hold on exports to prioritise its own vaccination campaign as infections rise.
The director-general of the World Health Organization says that is understandable, but it is important that India continue to export vaccines.
The government is running behind its own schedule for vaccinating 300 million people by August.
