On Friday, millions of Indians have begun voting in one of the most consequential elections in India's history.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a historic third term in office, and is facing stiff competition from Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian opposition party, Congress.
The Congress has formed a coalition with several regional parties to build a united opposition and has been campaigning against unemployment, farmers' distress, and corruption in the government. Modi's Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), on the other hand, is accused of promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda and dividing the country along religious lines.
If Modi wins, he’ll be only the second Indian leader to retain power for a third term, after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.
The elections will continue till June 1st, and nearly 1 billion voters will elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years. The results will be announced on June 4th.
Global's Shivangi Sharma reports.
