People in India grappled with soaring temperatures on Wednesday, as a record-breaking heatwave continued into another month, scorching parts of the country. Drone footage showed women drawing water from a well and nearby river, as parts of the landscape appeared bone-dry.

Eastern India experienced its hottest April on record last month, with the state of Bengal reporting the highest number of heatwave days for the month in the last 15 years. In the coastal state of Odisha, heat conditions are the worst they’ve been in nine years.

“Despite our efforts to keep cool by pouring water on ourselves, nothing is working. We can feel steam rising from the ground,” described Kolkata resident Bharti Das.

India’s weather office expects rainfall will be normal in the month of May and predicts more showers during the second half of the monsoon season in August and September, compared to June and July.
