Residents of New Delhi and Manali in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state were grappling Saturday with the damage and loss caused by floods after heavy rain. In Manali, one the worst affected villages, roads were severely damaged and a school building was washed away.
"I used to study in this school and I felt really bad when the school building was washed away. The studies of children who are from far-off places are also suffering. I feel really sad that the children are hit by this loss. Our memories are also washed away with the school," former student Chandrakala said.
The Yamuna river's levels were at their highest in 45 years this week following unusually heavy rainfall in New Delhi and hilly northern states, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people as the Yamuna, which runs through the city, breached its banks.
Delhi has recorded rainfall 91 per cent above-normal this monsoon season that began June 1. It has received 309 mm (12 inches) of rainfall so far in July, which is the third highest for the month for at least 12 years, according to the India Meteorological Department.
