United States Senator Chuck Schumer delivered his first speech since taking over the role of Senate Majority Leader on Wednesday, following the swearing-in of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris earlier that day.

Schumer became majority leader following the election of Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Georgia's runoff elections.

“We have turned the page to a new chapter in the history of our democracy,” he said at the outset of his speech, admitting that Wednesday’s inauguration was “unlike most others.” He highlighted the closure of the National Mall and the presence of tens of thousands of National Guard troops.

Schumer also spoke about the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying “it takes a lot more than a band of hooligans to bring our grand democracy down.”

Schumer pledged to “work together” with Republican colleagues, and said that under his leadership the Senate will be “active, responsive, energetic and bold” in tackling the biggest issues confronting the United States – including the threat of climate change.
