The International Criminal Court has found Islamist militant Al-Hassan Ag Abdoul-Aziz guilty of multiple war crimes and crimes against humanity in Mali.

In its verdict, the Trial Chamber in The Hague found Al-Hassan responsible for torture, mutilation, arbitrary punishment and atrocities as a member of the terrorist group Ansar Dine and head of a Sharia police force.

The crimes were committed between April 2012 and January 2013 in Timbuktu, which at the time was controlled by Ansar Dine, an offshoot of Al-Qaeda. The criminal court based its investigation on nearly 2,200 alleged victims of Al-Hassan.

DW correspondent Jack Parrock reports from The Hague.
