"I was scared": Witnesses describe terrifying scene after 16 people shot at Brooklyn subway station

Witnesses described the chaos and confusion Tuesday after a gunman opened fire at a subway station in the Brooklyn borough of New York City during the morning commute, with one man who was on a different part of the train saying: “I was scared.”

New York City’s Public Advocate Juumane D. Williams spoke in the wake of the tragedy, saying he hoped it encouraged people to come together to tackle the problem of gun violence “in a real way.”

During a press conference earlier in the day, New York City officials said local hospitals were treating 16 patients in connection with the attack at the 36th Street station in the borough’s Sunset Park neighbourhood. Of the 16 patients, 10 have gunshot wounds and five are in critical condition.

As of Tuesday afternoon, police were still searching for the suspect.
