After the jury's decision to recommend sentencing Nikolas Cruz to life in prison for the 2018 murder of 17 people at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Thursday, the parents of the children whose lives were taken expressed disappointment that Cruz would be spared from the death penalty.

"I pray that that animal suffers every day of his life in jail. And he should have a short life," the father of Parkland shooting victim Alyssa Alhadeff said.

"This jury failed our families today. But I will tell you - the monster is gonna go to prison, and in prison, I hope and pray, he receives the kind of mercy from prisoners that he showed to my daughter and the 16 others," father of Parkland victim Jaime Guttenberg said.
