Elva Castro was a Venezuelan nurse working in the Andean country's interior until she says could no longer make ends meet.

She had worked for the state's health sector for 23 years, but was still only making the equivalent of six dollars U.S. a month.

"That really does nothing. We saw that we had to leave the country," she said, while speaking from a Brooklyn warehouse where she is receiving aid. Her granddaughter, Ainara, sat on her lap during her interview.

Castro and her family are not alone. As of October 2022, more than 7.1 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants have left their home country, fleeing poverty and violence and relocating around the world.

She is currently receiving support from the Masbia Soup Kitchens Network in New York. For the past few years, she and her family have relocated throughout South America before heading over the summer to the United States.

Their journey comes as U.S. and Mexican officials have agreed to a plan to curb rising numbers of Venezuelans crossing their shared border that will enable the United States to expel Venezuelans to Mexico, while also granting humanitarian access to thousands of them by air.

"I feel like we're being used politically," Castro said. "The truth is Venezuela is not liveable. You can't eat. And the United States knows this. And yes, we've been given help since arriving here. At least, we've been given shelter for sleeping. We're not in the streets. Our only real problem is with food, but we're getting help. You have to thank God for that."
