Humans have shifted Earth’s axis by pumping lots of groundwater: scientists

Humans have extracted trillions of tonnes of groundwater for farming and drinking — so much water that scientists are now saying it has shifted the tilt of the entire planet, moving the “rotation axis” or “north pole.”

When groundwater is pumped and used at the surface, it eventually finds its way into the oceans, adding to sea level rise. And as the planet spins at 1,600 kilometers per hour, all that extra water sloshes around in its new location

Research shows that it weighs so much that it is shifting earth's axis at a rate of 4.36 centimetres per year.

As Jackson Proskow explains, the planet's wandering axis could have unintended consequences.
