The relationship between the two leaders has ranged from insults and threats in 2017 to the then-landmark meeting in 2018. But negotiations stalled after US President Donald Trump rejected Kim Jong Un’s demand for sanctions relief.
Most analysts believe North Korea would prefer a Trump victory. They see his impulsiveness, such as when he unilaterally cancelled joint military exercises with South Korea, as their best chance of getting relief from sanctions.
In contrast, a presidential victory for Joe Biden would likely be a return to the more traditional policy of "strategic patience", keeping up sanctions pressure and international isolation.
Biden has said he would not meet Kim without preconditions, describing him as a "tyrant" and a "thug".
North Korea, in turn, called Biden a "rabid dog".
Kim has called for a rare governing party congress to convene in January 2021, to announce a new five-year plan for the crippled economy, where he is also likely to map out the future strategy towards the US, based on the election outcome.

Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride reports from South Korea's capital, Seoul.
