When British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira disappeared in the Amazon jungle earlier this year, Channel 4 News Latin America correspondent Guillermo Galdos joined the search to find them.
But the Amazon is rife with criminal activity and violent gangs, who - emboldened by Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro - are looking to make themselves rich by exploiting the natural world the indigenous are fighting to protect.
The two men’s disappearance garnered worldwide attention, but the authorities were slow to act - and the search was led by the indigenous people that Dom and Bruno had worked so closely with.
As Brazil goes to the polls for the second time in the 2022 general election to decide the future of their country, Guillermo Galdos reveals what this tragic story can tell us about Bolsonaro’s legacy, and the risks faced by indigenous people and those fighting to protect them.
Produced by: Frances Rankin, Kieron Bryan, Guillermo Galdos, Matthew Lucas and Ian Watkins.
