The far-right AfD party has seen its popularity surge lately. In spite of the fact that sections of the party are seen by many experts as linked to extremist and anti-democratic circles, it has won elections for local government positions in a couple of eastern states - giving it access to the levers of actual power for the first time. And the party's poll numbers have risen to a historical high.
