How can parents stretch their dollar for back-to-school shopping during inflation?

With inflation increasing the price of so many things we use every day, many households are looking to save and stretch dollars during an expensive time of year: back-to-school shopping.

Personal finance expert Nathalie Douglas will be bartering where she can — which doesn’t cost anything but time — and squeezing as much use as possible out of last year’s items.

According to the Retail Council of Canada, 80 per cent of households will make back-to-school purchases. 56 per cent will be buying new clothes, nearly a third are purchasing books and music, while one in five are shopping for electronics.

While a new inflation report revealed that Canada’s inflation rate fell to 7.6 per cent in July, inflation hit a 39-year high of 8.1 per cent in June, with gasoline prices the single biggest contributor to the overall rate increase.

While the numbers have fallen, we aren’t out of hot water yet. How can parents save money during this time? Global’s Anne Gaviola has some tips.
