U.S. and British officials say at least two crew members are dead, and several more are injured, after a ship navigating off the coast of Yemen was attacked by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Wednesday.

The deaths mark the first reported fatal strike on a commercial vessel in the region, which has seen tensions rise since Israel's war on Hamas.

The attack on the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier 'True Confidence' further escalates the conflict on a crucial maritime route linking Asia and the Middle East to Europe, which has disrupted global shipping. The Iranian-backed Houthis have launched attacks since November, and the U.S. began an airstrike campaign in January that so far hasn’t halted the rebels’ attacks.
