Republican House leaders spoke Tuesday a week after multiple votes for Kevin McCarthy to become Speaker of the House raised concerns about their ability to govern, but Conference Chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik balked at concerns saying they were "laser-focused" on passing their "Commitment to America" agenda.
Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer and Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise faced questions, however, on the deals made by McCarthy from the party's most conservative members to secure enough votes to take the gavel. Both members, however, sidestepped reporters' questions, saying the rules package voted on Monday was "very basic," with only minor changes.
"This will arguably not make Kevin McCarthy a weaker Speaker, this will make Kevin McCarthy perhaps the strongest Speaker in modern times," Emmer said, quoting another Republican member's comments in a private GOP conference held earlier that day.
House Democratic leadership also spoke Tuesday, blasting the deals McCarthy made. Caucus Chair Rep. Pete Aguilar said that the "chaos and crisis on the other side of the aisle" had not stopped the GOP. He added McCarthy "caved to demands from extremists in their conference."
Asked about reports McCarthy planned to prevent Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell from sitting on the intelligence committee, Aguilar said the steering committee would put forward names they support. He said what the "Speaker does beyond that, we'll handle."
