Hopping-high chocolate prices: What a cocoa shortage means for your Easter basket

The price of chocolate has hit a record high of $10,000 USD per tonne of cocoa.

So, while the Easter Bunny may be able to score a discount by buying in bulk, Canadians stocking up on easter eggs and chocolate bunnies may find those confections causing a bigger dent in their wallet this year.

One Canadian chocolatier says he’s been able to hold prices for now but that won’t last for long.

Bad weather and disease in West Africa have damaged crop yields, hurting supply. And higher cocoa prices are another obstacle for manufacturers already struggling with higher sugar prices over the past three years.
