Hollywood’s television and movie writers engaged in labour action Tuesday for the first time in 15 years after negotiations between studios and the writers, which began in March, failed to reach a new contract.

The Writers Guild of America, the union which represents 11,500 unionized screenwriters, says its members are facing an “existential crisis.”

Screenwriters claim streaming is having a seismic shift on the industry and say they’re not being fairly compensated. They also worry that AI is coming for their jobs.

The labour dispute could have a cascading effect on TV and film productions, depending on how long the strike persists. But on Tuesday night we’ll see the first effects of the walkout, as late-night shows go dark.

Jackson Proskow reports on the strike and how it will impact what you watch both on television and on the big screen.
