Omar Ashour, of the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies, believes the release of captives as part of the truce deal is beneficial for Gaza’s ruling entity.

“Hamas does not want a group of that size. It’s major responsibility … in a warfare situation that includes monitoring and providing security for them,” he told Al Jazeera.

The group is estimated to still be holding more than 200 people following the release of 24 civilians on Friday.

Meanwhile, calls have been growing about an extension in the four-day pause. And on Friday, US President Joe Biden said the chances for such a development were “real”.

Commenting on a potential extension, Ashour said it was hard to make such a prediction at this point.

“If there are no major violations, and these exchanges are positive [publicly] for the Netanyahu government … some extension maybe possible,” he said.
