Responding to newly-approved teaching guidelines about Black American history on Friday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris criticized the Florida board of education for replacing “history with lies.”
"I am deeply concerned because let's be clear, I do believe this is not only about the state of Florida. There is a national agenda afoot,” Harris said during a press conference in the sunshine state.
Among the new guidelines for teachers are certain controversial "benchmark clarifications," including one for middle school students that claims "instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit."
“Adults know what slavery really involved… It involved some of the worst examples of depriving people of humanity in our world. It involved subjecting people to the requirement that they would think of themselves and be thought of as less than human,” Harris added.
These new standards "confirmed many of the worst fears" educators may have had following passage of laws targeting "woke" ideology in the state, the Florida Education Association teachers' union said in a statement.
