Israel once again pummeled the Gaza strip with airstrikes, destroying a building that housed offices of The Associated Press and other international media outlets, as the violence escalates.

Israeli officials said the media building hit by missiles on Saturday was a legitimate target because it contained military assets of Hamas, the political organization nominally in control of Gaza.

The strike was condemned by the AP and Al Jazeera. The United States told Israel "that ensuring the safety and security of journalists and independent media is a paramount responsibility," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

Crystal Goomansingh reports on the mounting pressure on the international community to help find a peaceful solution.
