Brittney Griner testified in her own defence during her ongoing trial for drug possession in Khimki, Russia on Wednesday.
The U.S. basketball star pleaded guilty to accidentally bringing hashish oil into Russia, but stressed she had not had any intention of smuggling any illegal substances into Russia.
Griner said she had been prescribed medical cannabis in the United States to treat chronic injuries in the offseason, a treatment not uncommon among elite athletes in countries where the substance is allowed. It is, however, illegal in Russia.
The defence team adduced to court the evidence of post-COVID syndrome affecting the patient’s memory and ability to concentrate, Alexander Boykov,
one of Griner's lawyers told reporters.
They also provided the court with information from the production company website saying that cartridges found in Griner’s luggage have been meant for medical use, said another attorney, Maria Blagovolina.
Deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Elizabeth Rood, said they talked to Griner and were monitoring her case closely as well as cases of other U.S. citizens detained or imprisoned in Russia.
